The Council of the European Union has extended until June 23, 2023, the sanctions imposed against Russia due to the illegal annexation of Crimea. EU High Representative for Foreign Affairs Josep Borrell said that Europe still does not recognize and condemns the illegal annexation of Crimea as a serious violation of international law.

“Russia has further violated the sovereignty and territorial integrity of Ukraine with its unprovoked and unjustified war of aggression against Ukraine, which the EU continues to strongly condemn. It calls on Russia to immediately stop indiscriminate attacks on the civilian population and civilian infrastructure, and to immediately and unconditionally withdraw all of its troops and military equipment from all of Ukraine's territory within its internationally recognized borders.

Sanctions due to the annexation of Crimea were introduced in June 2014. In particular, they provide for a ban on the import and export of goods from the peninsula to Europe and back, on the entry of European cruise liners to the ports of Crimea and the provision of other tourist services, on infrastructure and financial investments.
