The rector of the Russian Academy of National Economy and Public Administration (RANEPA) Vladimir Mau, who is accused in a criminal case of fraud on an especially large scale, has had his preventive measure changed from house arrest to a written undertaking not to leave the country. This was reported by The New Times , interlocutors of the BBC Russian Service and RBC .
The preventive measure was changed at the request of the investigator.
The Telegram channel "112" claims that restrictions imposed by the court have also been lifted from Mau: receiving correspondence, negotiating, using the Internet and other means of communication.
Updated: A little later, TASS, citing a source, reported that Sergei Zuev, rector of Shaninka, confessed to the fraud case and compensated for the damage established by the investigation. The Ministry of Internal Affairs also asked the Tverskoy Court of Moscow to transfer Zuev from the pre-trial detention center to house arrest.
On July 22, the Tverskoy Court of Moscow sent Vice-Rector of the RANEPA Ivan Fedotov under house arrest; he is involved in the same case as Vladimir Mau. The Mau case is connected with the cases of the former Deputy Minister of Education Marina Rakova and the rector of Shaninka Sergei Zuev. They are accused of fraud with money from the budget allocated for the development of education.
According to The Insider columnist Boris Grozovsky, the arrest of the RANEPA rector showed that even a mild opposition is now unacceptable for the Kremlin. Read more about this in the material “Malignant education. Boris Grozovsky on how and why the Kremlin cracked down on Russian universities.
