Russians will be allowed to take TOEFL, but only online or abroad

Russians will still be allowed to take the international exam in English TOEFL. Stephanie Winters, a representative of the ETS organization that conducts the exam, told Mediazone about this.

She stated that the words about the ban on passing the TOEFL for Russians were interpreted incorrectly. The warning was about the impossibility of conducting face-to-face testing in Russia, and not about the citizenship of the examinees.

“Starting August 4, ETS will amend its March 2022 rules to allow test takers in Russia and Belarus to register for the [remote] TOEFL iBT Home Edition, TOEFL Essentials, and GRE Home Edition if they are not financially impeded to do so. ," ETS said in a response.

The fact that ETS banned Russians from taking TOEFL became known on August 2. As explained in the organization, Russians and citizens of the DPRK are prohibited from enrolling in exams or creating accounts in accordance with the requirements of the US Department of the Treasury. However, the requirements themselves were not listed.

The ban on taking exams in Russia and Belarus was introduced by ETS back in March, the same restriction was introduced by organizations of the international system for assessing English language proficiency IELTS.
