Sri Lankan party leaders ask president and prime minister to resign

Sri Lankan party leaders asked President Gotabay Rajapaksa and Prime Minister Ranil Wickramasinghe to step down. Rauff Hakim, head of the Sri Lanka Muslim Congress party, wrote about this on his Twitter.

According to him, according to the constitution, the speaker of parliament, Mahinda Yapa Abeywardena, should become the new president of the country. However, a consensus on the issue of resignation has not yet been reached :

“There is no consensus on this issue because the prime minister does not agree. However, the Speaker of Parliament decided to write to the President and Prime Minister asking them to resign.”

On July 9, anti-government protesters seized the presidential residence in Sri Lanka's largest city, Colombo. According to media reports, he managed to escape and tried to leave the country by plane.

The reason for the protests was the economic crisis that began in April. Experts rate it as the largest since 1948, when the country gained independence from Great Britain. Now there is no food, medicine and fuel on the island.
