Dmitry Muratov sold his Nobel medal for $103.5 million. All proceeds will go to Ukrainian refugees

Novaya Gazeta editor-in-chief Dmitry Muratov sold his Nobel medal at auction for $103.5 million. All proceeds will go to support UNICEF's humanitarian mission to help Ukrainian refugee children and their families.

Muratov announced his intention to put the medal up for sale at the end of March. He stressed that his decision was supported by all the employees of Novaya Gazeta:

“We decided to put up for auction the Nobel medal, gold, famous, heavy. This medal, which relies on the Nobel Peace Prize. The money will go to refugee children. Wherever they are: in Europe, in Ukraine or in Russia. There are no more alien refugees for the world.”

The auction took place at Heritage Auctions in New York. The starting price of the medal was $550,000. According to The Insider in Novaya Gazeta, there is no information about the buyer.

Muratov and American-Filipino journalist Maria Ressa received the Nobel Peace Prize in 2021 "for their efforts to preserve freedom of expression, which is a sine qua non for democracy and peace."
