A Ukrainian court banned the political party Opposition Platform – For Life after a lawsuit filed by the Ministry of Justice. This decision is explained by the fact that "the activity of the party is aimed at undermining the sovereignty of Ukraine."
“The court decided to transfer to the state all the property, funds and other assets of this party. This applies to regional, city and district organizations of the specified political party. In general, at the moment, the court of first instance has decided to ban pro-Russian political parties and those whose activities are aimed at undermining the sovereignty of Ukraine,” the Ukrainian Ministry of Justice said in a statement.
In May, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky signed a law banning "pro-Russian" parties in Ukraine. These, according to the decision of the National Security and Defense Council of the country, include Opposition Platform - For Life, Sharia Party, Nashi, Opposition Bloc, Left Opposition, Union of Left Forces, Power , Progressive Socialist Party of Ukraine, Socialist Party of Ukraine, "Socialists" and "Vladimir Saldo Bloc".
Since 2018, the Opposition Platform for Life has been headed by Viktor Medvedchuk. Before being elected to the Verkhovna Rada in 2019, Medvedchuk was also a member of the tripartite contact group to resolve the situation in Donbas. In October 2021, the Ukrainian authorities suspected Medvedchuk of financing terrorism. According to the SBU, in 2014 Medvedchuk organized a scheme to supply coal from the self-proclaimed DPR and LPR to the territory controlled by Ukraine. On March 18, the Lychakovsky District Court of Lvov arrested him in absentia and placed him under house arrest. Medvedchuk escaped from arrest, but a month later, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky announced his detention.
In 2004, Medvedchuk became the godfather of Vladimir Putin - he baptized his daughter Daria together with Dmitry Medvedev's wife Svetlana. It is known that in recent years, Medvedchuk regularly met with the Russian president.
