Names of 5,701 Russian soldiers killed in Ukraine confirmed – BBC News

The names of 5701 Russian soldiers have been confirmed, all of them died in the war in Ukraine. This was reported on August 19 by journalists from the BBC Russian Service and Mediazona, who update data from open sources together with volunteers.

Over the past three weeks, more than 80 people have died, ranging from lieutenant to captain. 966 people on the list (17%) are officers, with the largest proportion of casualties occurring among junior officers. Among the dead are four generals and 34 colonels, the journalists specified.

Most of the losses were in Dagestan (270 people), Buryatia (245 people) and the Krasnodar Territory (206 people). Journalists emphasize that only 14 dead from Moscow are officially known.

Since the beginning of the war in Ukraine, the Ministry of Defense has twice reported on the death of Russian servicemen - according to the latest data as of March 25, 1,351 soldiers were killed. At the same time, on May 30, the BBC Russian Service found out the names of 3,052 Russian soldiers who died in the war in Ukraine. The publication clarifies that these are incomplete figures, since the media and regional authorities do not name all the dead, even if their bodies were delivered to their families and buried. According to the General Staff of the Armed Forces of Ukraine (AFU), the total combat losses of Russia from the beginning of the war to July 10 amounted to 37.3 thousand personnel.
