The Magistrate's Court of the Tagansky District of Moscow fined the Snapchat and WhatsApp messengers for refusing to localize the data of Russian users in the country. Snapchat was fined 1 million rubles, and WhatsApp - 18 million.
Both messengers were found guilty under Part 8 of Art. 13.11 of the Code of Administrative Offenses (failure by the operator, when collecting personal data, of the obligation to ensure the recording, systematization, accumulation, storage of personal data of citizens of Russia).
Updated at 13:11 (Moscow time): the court also fined the dating app Tinder 2 million rubles .
WhatsApp was already fined under this article in August 2021, along with Facebook and Twitter. The total amount of the fine was 36 million rubles, of which 4 million rubles had to be paid by WhatsApp.
According to the law "On Personal Data", the company must store information about users from Russia only in the country. For non-compliance with localization requirements, foreign companies face a fine of 1 to 6 million rubles. In the event of a repeated violation, the amount increases to 6-18 million rubles.
