Italian Prime Minister Mario Draghi resigns. He announced this at a meeting of the Council of Ministers, he was quoted by the press service of the government.
"I want to announce that tonight I will submit my resignation to the President of the Republic."
Updated: Italian President Sergio Mattarella did not accept the Prime Minister's resignation.
As the Financial Times wrote the day before, Draghi's government was under threat due to a boycott of the decisive parliamentary vote by the Five Star Movement, the second largest party in parliament. The party refused to support Draghi's government and boycotted a vote on a €26bn aid package aimed at supporting Italians during a period of inflation. After that, the Prime Minister met with President Sergio Mattarella. It was noted that Draghi may resign.
The leader of the party, former Italian Prime Minister Giuseppe Conte, said he could no longer support the Draghi government. He accused him of not helping families facing rising food and energy costs. In addition, there was a split in the movement due to the different opinions of the participants about the supply of weapons to Kyiv.
Draghi denounced Russia's invasion of Ukraine and promoted tough EU sanctions against Moscow, supported by Foreign Minister Luigi Di Maio. Divisions in the government coalition intensified after Di Maio announced that he was leaving the Five Stars and decided to create his own political organization called Together for the Future. He was supported by several dozen party members.
Earlier, Boris Johnson decided to step down as Prime Minister of Great Britain and leader of the Conservative Party. He stated that he would carry out his duties until a new person was appointed to the position. Johnson stressed that the selection process must begin now. Before that, he refused to leave the post, despite the calls of the government and the departure of more than 50 officials from there.
