Ukraine severed diplomatic relations with the DPRK due to the recognition of the independence of the Russian-occupied territories of the "DNR" and "LNR". This is stated in the statement of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Ukraine.
"We consider this decision as an attempt to undermine the sovereignty and territorial integrity of Ukraine by Pyongyang, a gross violation of the Constitution of Ukraine, the UN Charter and the fundamental norms and principles of international law."
Ukrainian Foreign Minister Dmitry Kuleba said that Russia's appeal to the DPRK with a request to support the "forceful seizure of part of Ukrainian territory" says more about the toxicity of Moscow than Pyongyang. According to him, Russia no longer has any allies in the world, except for countries that depend on it financially and politically. Kuleba also added that the level of isolation of Russia "will soon reach the level of isolation of the DPRK."
At the end of June, Ukraine severed diplomatic relations with Syria for the same reason.
Earlier on July 13, the Democratic People's Republic of Korea recognized the "DPR" and "LPR". Prior to this, only Russia and Syria recognized the “republics”, North Korea became the third state to agree with their status.
The day before, the “DPR” embassy was opened in Moscow at 13 Grokholsky lane, building 2. However, the solemn opening ceremony with the participation of Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov did not take place, although it was announced earlier. As the guard at the "embassy" told the correspondent of the publication "Novaya Gazeta.Europe", the ceremony was canceled on the appointed day in the morning. It is not known when the celebration will take place with the invited guests. At the same time, it was reported the day before that Lavrov, official representatives of the "LPR", unrecognized Abkhazia and South Ossetia, as well as Syria, would take part in the opening ceremony.
Legally, Russia recognized the existence of the republics of the "LNR" and "DNR" before the invasion of Ukraine. Previously, there were no diplomatic relations between the country and the self-proclaimed republics: the post of “DNR” ambassador to Russia was established on May 6, and was taken by Olga Makeyeva, a Donetsk lawyer. Whether the Russian embassy in the “DPR” will appear in response is unknown: in April, the Minister of Foreign Affairs of the “DPR” Natalya Nikonorova claimed that this would happen “within a month”.
