Russian journalists, human rights activists and the EU demand the release of Ivan Safronov

Today, the Moscow City Court will pass a sentence on the ex-journalist of Kommersant and adviser to the head of Roscosmos Ivan Safronov. The Insider joins the demands of colleagues to release the journalist, as well as to launch an investigation against officials who committed violations during the investigation.

The prosecution requested for Safronov a huge term in a trumped -up case of "treason" - 24 years. At the same time, the prosecution did not provide any evidence of the journalist's guilt. On August 29, the Proekt publication published an indictment in the case of Safronov, from which it became clear that the witnesses do not know anything about the journalist's "crimes", and the secret information that he allegedly divulged is in the public domain. At a meeting on August 30, prosecutor Elvira Zotchik offered Safronov to admit his guilt in exchange for a term of 12 years in prison. The journalist refused to make a deal.

During the investigation, Ivan spent two years in the Lefortovo pre-trial detention center without the opportunity to see his relatives and even without the opportunity to talk to his mother on the phone.

Russian journalists , human rights activists and EU representatives demand that Ivan Safronov be immediately acquitted and released from custody. The Insider joins the statements of colleagues and demands the release of the journalist.

Journalism is not a crime. Freedom for Ivan Safronov!
