The police officer who attacked the former head of the Committee against Torture, Igor Kalyapin, has been fired. This was reported by human rights activist Eva Merkacheva.
According to her, the policeman's name is Sergey Chernigovsky. He served with the rank of major in the criminal investigation department of Nizhny Novgorod. According to Merkacheva, a criminal case was opened against him. The Insider tried to confirm this information with the Main Directorate of the Ministry of Internal Affairs for the Nizhny Novgorod Region, but the duty officer did not answer the question and hung up.
Chernigov met Kalyapin at a visit to their mutual friend on the evening of 24 August. After the friend fell asleep, the human rights activist suggested that Chernigovskiy continue the feast at his home. When they came to Kalyapin, the policeman tried to cut his face and strangle him. The human rights activist was hospitalized with a concussion, his face was also broken.
Kalyapin told The Insider that he has video surveillance in his house. The video from the cameras, according to him, shows the moment of the attack. It has been handed over to investigators.
According to Baza, Chernigov accused Kalyapin of harassment. He claims that the human rights activist touched his penis. According to him, after the end of the feast with a friend, Kalyapin invited him to a bathhouse, where he allegedly began to pester him.
Valery Fadeev, chairman of the Russian Presidential Council for the Development of Civil Society and Human Rights , said he saw no connection between the attack on Kalyapin and his human rights activities.
