Kyiv Mayor Vitali Klitschko announced that 95 streets in the city were renamed, the names of which were associated with Russia. New names, he said, should perpetuate the memory of the outstanding historical events of Ukraine, as well as famous figures and heroes who fought for the country's independence.
“This is an important step towards reducing false manipulations and the influence of the Russian aggressor on the interpretation of our history,” Klitschko wrote on his Telegram channel.
Among those renamed are Marshal Malinovsky Street, which became the street of the Heroes of the Azov Regiment, Tula Square (Heroes of the Ukrainian Insurgent Army), Michurin Street (Marines) and Piterskaya Street (now Londonskaya).
The process of renaming streets in Kyiv is not over yet, Klitschko added.
At the end of April, 73% of Ukrainians were positive about the idea of renaming streets associated with Russia, 9% are negative, and 17% are neutral, according to a survey by the Ukrainian sociological group Rating.
