Sweden deports Chechen to Russia who fled because of torture

Sweden is preparing to deport the ethnic Chechen Arthur Sh. to Russia. According to the Vayfond human rights foundation, he escaped from Chechnya, where he was tortured.

The name of the victim has not been released. According to the fund, the Swedish migration authorities are preparing to transfer Arthur S. to his homeland in the near future through a third country that has agreed to become a transit country.

The Swedish authorities repeatedly denied Artur S. refugee status. The reason for the refusal was the fact that the applicant did not remember the details of the torture. In Vayfond, this is attributed to the fact that he could have memory problems due to the fact that the Chechen security forces hit him on the head. "Traces of possible torture" were confirmed by an independent medical examination of the Red Cross (Sweden).

“The Vayfond Association, after studying his dossier and the details of his case, confirms that the Swedish decision is contrary to the Geneva Refugee Convention and the European Convention on Human Rights, in particular Articles 2 and 3 of the ECHR,” the human rights activists said in a statement.
