In the city of San Antonio in southern Texas, the bodies of 46 migrants were found in an abandoned truck with a trailer, writes Reuters. Another 16 people from there - 12 adults and four children - were taken to the hospital. Those in the hospital suffered from heatstroke and prolonged overheating, a spokesman for the city's fire department said. According to him, there was no air conditioning and water in the truck with the trailer.
On June 27 at approximately 6 pm local time, a local worker called emergency services after hearing cries for help from a truck. Through the half-open door, he saw dozens of dead. It is reported that on this day the air temperature in San Antonio reached almost 40 degrees Celsius.
Reuters, citing city police chief William McManus, reports that 3 people have been detained in connection with the tragedy, but it is not yet clear how exactly they were involved in the incident.
San Antonio is located 250 kilometers from the US-Mexico border. A US Immigration and Customs Enforcement spokesman said an investigation into "alleged human smuggling" had begun.
