Chargé d'affaires a.i. of Lithuania has been summoned to the Russian Foreign Ministry, RIA Novosti reports . She was told that if cargo transit to the Kaliningrad region is not restored in full in the near future, Russia reserves the right to take actions to protect its national interests.
“We regard the provocative measures of the Lithuanian side, which violate the international legal obligations of Lithuania, primarily the Joint Statement of the Russian Federation and the European Union on transit between the Kaliningrad region and the rest of the territory of the Russian Federation of 2002, as openly hostile,” the Foreign Ministry said in a statement.
A day earlier, Lithuania officially announced that it had stopped the rail transit of part of the cargo from the main territory of Russia to the Kaliningrad region. In addition, after August 10, restrictions may also affect the supply of petroleum products.
The governor of the Kaliningrad region, Anton Alikhanov, called Lithuania's actions illegal.
