Soviet and Russian politician Gennady Burbulis died in Baku at the age of 77.

Burbulis was one of the closest associates of the first Russian President Boris Yeltsin. After his victory in the elections, he appointed Burbulis the Secretary of State of Russia. He was the only person to hold this position.

Burbulis participated in the signing of the Belovezhskaya Accords by the RSFSR. He is the author of the phrase "The USSR as a subject of international law and geopolitical reality ceases to exist."

November 2, 2001 was appointed representative of the administration of the Novgorod region in the Federation Council. At various times, he also served as chairman of the Federation Council Commission on the methodology for the implementation of the constitutional powers of the Federation Council and adviser to the chairman of the Federation Council.

Over the past two months, two other participants in the Belovezhskaya Accords have died - the first president of Ukraine, Leonid Kravchuk , and the former chairman of the Supreme Council of Belarus, Stanislav Shushkevich.
