Volodymyr Zelensky, in his evening video message, announced that Ukrainian paramedic Yulia Paevskaya, also known as Tayra, has been released from Russian captivity.
Taira was taken prisoner in Mariupol on 16 March. Shortly thereafter, the Russian propaganda media published a video with her, in which the woman is called a member of the Azov battalion. In fact, Taira did not serve in the army, but was a civilian, volunteering to provide medical assistance to those injured during the shelling.
She started working as a paramedic in 2014, during the Euromaidan. After the start of the war in the Donbass, she took the call sign "Taira" - according to her, this is the name of her character in the World of Warcraft game. Before being captured, she gave video from her chest camera to an Associated Press correspondent. They filmed the work of doctors caring for the wounded in Mariupol.
In 2022, she was nominated for the Boris Nemtsov Prize. Among the candidates were also the mayor of Kiev Vitaliy Klitschko, the leader of the Okean Elzy group Svyatoslav Vakarchuk, adviser to the President of Ukraine Oleksiy Arestovich, the leader of the Boombox group Andriy Khlyvnyuk and Volodymyr Zelensky, who eventually became a laureate.
